He has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.  He was director of the Creative Writing Program at Eckerd College for 20 years and is the co-founder with Dennis Lehane of the Writers in Paradise Conference, now in its 20th year.  He teaches in the Solstice MFA Program at Lasell University in Boston.
